Calling all Ghibli fans!
A Whisper of the Heart live-action sequel is coming out later this year. Directed by Yuichiro Hirakawa, the film follows the events of the 1995 animated film ten years later, depicting the life of aspiring writer Shizuku Tsukishima and luthier-in-training Seiji Amasawa.
While many international viewers first learned about Shizuku and Seiji through the Ghibli movie, the coming-of-age story was first released as a manga by Aoi Hiiragi in 1989.

Nana Seino as Shizuku Tsukishima
Nana Seino takes on the role of Shizuku Tsukishima in her later years. The actress also starred in other anime-based films like Kingdom 2, and shared an on-screen romance with Kentaro Sakaguchi in the Japanese drama series Only Just Married.
Tori Matsuzaka as Seiji Amasawa
Tori Matsuzaka will play Seiji Amasawa as a young adult who pursues his dream of becoming a luthier. The actor is no stranger to music-based roles, previously playing a pianist in the film Listen to the Universe.
Runa Yasuhara as young Shizuku Tsukishima
Runa Yasuhara will portray the younger version of Shizuku, a junior high school student who has a passion for writing. This will be Yasuhara’s first major role in a film. The 16-year-old appeared in various dramas and TV shows as a minor character and voice-over artist respectively.
Tsubasa Nakagawa as young Seiji Amasawa
Tsubasa Nakagawa joins the cast as young Seiji Amasawa, Shizuku’s schoolmate who crafts violins in the workshop of his grandfather’s antique store. Nakagawa also played Satoru Fujinuma’s ten-year-old self in the live-action adaptation of Erased.

Release date of Whisper of the Heart live-action sequel
The live-action adaptation is slated for an October 14 release in Japan.
Sony Pictures has yet to confirm an international release date.
