Drew McCoy, one of the key figures behind Apex Legends, Titanfall, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order developer Respawn Entertainment, has announced his departure from the company.
McCoy made his decision public via Twitter, where he shared kind words for both the people he worked alongside with at Respawn, as well as the fans who put the studio’s games on the map.
With Respawn Entertainment, McCoy served as the lead producer for first-person shooter Titanfall. He was promoted to senior producer for the next iteration of the game, Titanfall 2.
McCoy followed up his string of successes with last year’s surprise battle royale hit Apex Legends. For this title, McCoy has played an even larger role overseeing the creative direction of the game as its executive producer.
While McCoy hinted that he is still likely to stay involved in the gaming industry, he frankly admitted that he is “not sure where [he is] going yet.”

McCoy’s legacy with Respawn goes well beyond the games he helped create. He has also become one of the most outspoken figures behind today’s most popular titles.
In August 2019, he sparked outrage after critiquing Apex Legends fans with a few unsavory words in reaction to players’ complaints about expensive limited-time event items.
Late last month, he also called out data miners for leaking info on “cool surprises” that the Apex Legends devs “spend insane amounts of time and energy to create.”
His Twitter rant even drew a response from renowned data miner That1MiningGuy, who has since promised to quit the leaks.
Before Respawn Entertainment was established, McCoy was part of Infinity Ward, the studio behind 2007’s Call of Duty 4. It was with this company that he formed ties with Infinity Ward founders Vince Zampella and Jason West, with whom he co-founded Respawn in 2010.
