The Arena of Valor World Cup (AWC) 2020 has joined the growing list of esports events canceled by the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

News of the cancellation broke on Arena of Valor’s official Twitter account, with game developer, Tencent, saying it was deeply concerned for the health and well-being of players, fans, partners, and staff.

The AWC is one of the biggest and most prestigious tournaments in the international Arena of Valor scene. The annual competition attracts the best Arena of Valor players from around the world, all who compete under the banner of their respective country.

AWC 2020 would have been the third edition of the yearly event, organized by Garena and Tencent. With a total prize pool of US$500,000, the previous edition in Vietnam was touted as the most-watched mobile esports tournament to date with a total watch time of 139 million hours.

The competition ended in a nail-biting 4-3 win by host country Vietnam who bested Chinese Taipei and walked away with US$200,000 in tournament winnings.

The organizers added that they remain committed to bringing more Arena of Valor esports content to the community and had explored every possible option before ultimately coming to the decision to cancel the event.

Tencent said it will soon unveil more information on its future plans for Arena of Valor soon.
