Blizzard Entertainment is looking to expand the mythologies of two of its most prized properties through animated series adaptations.
This exciting news comes from quite the interesting source — a LinkedIn profile update, courtesy of Activision Blizzard Studios co-president Nick van Dyk. Activision Blizzard Studios is video game publisher Activision’s official movie label, formed in 2015.
Here’s the excerpt from the van Dyk’s updated resume:
Diablo fans have plenty to be excited about, as van Dyk makes it clear that the anime-style adaptation of the classic horror-action game is already in pre-production. The series will follow in the footsteps of Castlevania as a video game-based anime offering on Netflix.
The Overwatch adaptation, meanwhile, is still in its very early stages. It’s at least encouraging to know that rights to the franchise were already sold, albeit to a still unnamed production outfit.

In the snippet above, van Dyk also wrote about an upcoming “Call of Duty cinematic and television universe.” That one already has a director in Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) and even features a screenplay from Joker scribe Scott Silver.
However, this project may take a while to see the light of day as it appears to have been shelved indefinitely. Sollima has gone on record to announce that the CoD film adaptation “is no longer (at the moment) an industrial priority of … Activision” (translated from Italian).
There is plenty left to be desired as far as concrete details for these projects are concerned. But with both Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 currently in production, there may be reason for Blizzard to build up some buzz as they approach the (also yet-to-be-announced) release dates for these titles.
