The official lyric video for Lady Gaga and Blackpink‘s collaborative song, Sour Candy, looks like a virtual reality (VR) video game.
Set in the vibrant world of Chromatica, the lyric video is as abstract as it can get. It opens up with four floating creatures that represent Blackpink members Jennie in blue, Lisa in yellow, Rose in red, and Jisoo in purple. Lady Gaga is the enormous pink being dancing around in the video.
The Sour Candy music video is a huge trip for gamers
Fans have also observed that each Blackpink member belongs to a different tribe, as introduced in the Stupid Love music video, released months ahead of the Sour Candy music video.
The Sour Candy music video was directed by motion capture performer Sam Rolfes.
“All characters were puppetted live in VR,” said Rolfes in a tweet. “We spent a long time flying around with them, getting to know their personalities and how they moved so we could dance together.”
Rolfes is also a 3D animator and a graphic designer and has created a video game with a similar style in the past.
Sour Candy is just one of the songs in Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album entitled Chromatica. The song is an analog to society’s unfair expectations for women.
The Sour Candy lyric video isn’t the only video with game visuals. One of the scenes on another Chromatica song, Rain On Me, is giving us major Bayonetta vibes.
Could this be Lady Gaga’s way of paying tribute to one of her beloved video game titles?
