There hasn’t been a team in the history of Dota 2 that has been quite as dominant as this season’s Team Secret.

Then again, if your team has a roster consisting of two The International (TI) champions in Clement “Puppey” Ivanov and Lasse “Matumbaman” Urpalainen alongside Michal “Nisha” Jankowski, Ludwig “zai” Wåhlberg, and Yazied “YapzOr” Jaradat, excellence should be the norm.

After all, that roster includes players that are all in the top 5 of the best players in the world in each position.

They have the results to show for it too: a Major championship at DreamLeague Season 13: The Leipzig Major before the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) was suspended followed by seven-straight tournament wins once the scene shifted to online competition.

So, there is no doubt that this season’s Team Secret is one of the most dominant teams in the history of the game. But are they hands-down the most dominant team of all-time?

Let’s take a look at some of the numbers to find our answer.

Let’s start with their win rate. According to data from datdota, Secret played 195 games this season and won 160 of them to post an absurd 82% win rate.

For comparison, here are all the other teams that posted a win rate above 60% this season in a minimum of 100 games:

Quincy Crew: 101-36 (73%)
Virtus.pro: 155-90 (63%)
PSG.LGD: 132-77 (63%)
Evil Geniuses: 124-73 (62%)
Thunder Predator: 137-82 (62%)
Vici Gaming: 145-96 (60%)

You have to consider that those other teams played a majority of their games in regions with weaker competitions.

Numbers aside, it’s also really, really hard to make a good case that any of those teams are better than Secret (who, by the way, are dominating Europe, the best region in Dota).

To better put Secret’s dominance this season into perspective, let’s look at how they stack up to two of the other teams that were historically dominant: 2013 Alliance and 2015-2016 OG.

From the formation of their organization to their victory at TI3, 2013 Alliance played in 208 games and won 157 of them to post a 75% win rate. Meanwhile, from the formation of their organization to the end of their run at TI6, the 2015-2016 OG squad played in 220 games and won 145 of them to post a 66% win rate.

It seems closer until you consider the fact that those two teams played against significantly worse competition compared to what Secret faced this season, by virtue of the natural progression of players getting better on average as the game continues to mature.

Not only that, the current Team Secret has also broken all records for the best run of any team in the history of the game, according to datdota.

Secret posted the best 50-game run of any team in history, going 47-3 from May to June to break the previous best run of 45-5 posted by Fnatic and Newbee back in 2016.

For the best 75-game run of all time, Secret went 67-8 from May to June to break the previous best run of 65-10 posted by Newbee back in 2016.

For the best 100-game run of all time, Secret went 87-13 from May to August to break the previous best run of 83-17 posted by Alliance back in 2013.

For the best 150-game run of all time, no other team came close. Secret went 123-27 from January to June to beat a 122-28 run they themselves started putting in December last year.

Those numbers don’t even come close to encapsulating just how dominant Secret has been in recent months, especially during their ongoing streak of seven-straight championships that started in May.

Let’s list down who their opponents were in each of those finals series:

At WePlay! Pushka League Season 1, they defeated Virtus.pro Prodigy. At the Gamers Without Borders charity tournament, they defeated Na’Vi. At OGA Dota PIT Online EU/CIS, they defeated Team Liquid. At BLAST Bounty Hunt, they defeated OG. At BEYOND EPIC: EU/CIS, they defeated Team Nigma. Then most recently at the OMEGA League Europe Immortal Division, they defeated OG for a second time.

Oh, did we forget to mention that all of those series were clean 3-0 sweeps? They weren’t facing weak competition by any means either. The teams Secret dominated include VP, who have a win rate of over 60% this season, as well as two TI-winning squads in Nigma and OG, with the latter being swept twice.

There has been no other team in the history of professional Dota 2 that has won seven-straight tournaments. There has also been no other team in the history of the game that swept seven-straight grand finals. Does all that not scream all-time domination to you?

Of course, there are caveats. While Secret did look dominant during the Leipzig Major against international competition, one can argue that their online results have all been against teams from Europe or the CIS. But then again, can you honestly say that the competition in other regions is better than in Europe?

With that said, the biggest knock against Secret’s current dominant streak is that they have only won one Major thus far and have not yet won TI.

It’s a fact that cannot be ignored, but if anything, it can help further Secret’s case should they continue dominating everyone else once the DPC comes back and TI10 finally happens.

But Secret’s streak isn’t done yet. Far from it, it’s looking like they’ll win every tournament in Europe until the DPC returns next year then continue their dominance there.

We’ve made our case for Secret being the most dominant team of all time, but, of course, in order for them to truly claim that title, they will have to cap off this historic run by raising the Aegis of Champions in TI10.

With the way they have utterly dominated everyone they faced this season, we have to admit that it’s really hard to bet against them doing just that.
