Fortnite: Battle Royale esports will continue even after the end of the Fortnite World Cup Finals, as Epic Games has announced that its smash-hit battle royale will be getting its own premier esports circuit called the Fortnite Championship Series.
The Fortnite Championship Series will see Fortnite pros competing across whole seasons “where every single result matters.” Epic said that the series will kick off alongside Fortnite Season 10 on August 1, with a leaderboard being introduced in order to keep tabs on results across the season.
“Competitive Fortnite isn’t going anywhere,” Epic said in its announcement during the Fortnite World Cup Solo Finals.
In addition, there will be “millions of dollars” on the line throughout the series. The entirety of the Fortnite World Cup gave away US$100 million in prizes, with US$30 million won during the Fortnite World Cup Finals alone.
16-year-old Kyle “Bugha” Geirsdorf won US$3 million in the Fortnite World Cup Solo Finals while Emil “Nyhrox” Pedersen and David “aqua” W. took home US$1.5 million each from the Duos Finals.
Epic did not reveal any more details on the series in its initial announcement, with more information expected to be revealed when Season 10 drops next week.
The Fortnite Championship Series will be Epic’s first major esports initiative following its recruitment of former Overwatch League commissioner Nate Nantzer back in May.
Epic and Nantzer are seemingly intent on having Fortnite esports going throughout the year, instead of only during a certain period as with the Fortnite World Cup.
