New tournament formats for Fortnite: Battle Royale, namely Gauntlet Solos and Gauntlet Duos, have gone live for testing alongside the game’s latest v8.01 update.
As the name of the new format implies, players will go through a series of matches to see who can earn the highest total score at the end of the event.
Players will first have to go through a Gauntlet Test event, available for both Solo and Duo players, which has no match limit and will run until March 9.
Since this format works as a series, players will have to pay a “Bus Fare” worth two points at the start of each match. This deduction won’t reduce player scores to the negatives however, but will simply just set it to zero.
Here’s the scoring breakdown for the new tournament format:
- Victory Royale: +3 Points (+10 Total)
- 2nd – 5th: +2 Points (+7 Total)
- 6th – 10th: +2 Points (+5 Total)
- 11th – 25th: +3 Points (+3 Total)
- Each Elimination: +1 Point
Because the new format will run for much longer than other events — which makes it difficult to have the same Duo partner all throughout — Duo players will each have their own score that remains even after changing partners.
At the conclusion of the Gauntlet Test Event, the Top 5% of players based on their final score will unlock the ‘Gauntlet Finals’ tournament — a scheduled 3-hour event.
The Gauntlet Finals will have the same scoring breakdown as the Gauntlet Test events. Unlike the Gauntlet Tests however, the Gauntlet Finals has a limit of 10 matches.
The Top 3,000 players in the Gauntlet Finals for each server region will then advance to Round 2.
With the Fortnite World Cup set to begin later this year, Epic Games seems to be busy looking for a viable competitive format for its marquee esports event. Players can expect tests for new tournament formats such as this as the start of the Fortnite World Cup draws closer.
