Apple unveiled two new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros today, and both come with fancy new technology that can make your childhood dreams come to life.
Remember when you were a kid and you played ‘The floor is lava‘, jumping from the couch to the armchair all while avoiding touching the floor? The iPad Pro’s new LiDAR scanner — which stands for Light Detection and Ranging — can turn your living room (or any room) into an augmented reality version of Klei’s Hot Lava, a game based around that very same concept.
The LiDAR scanner can create a detailed map of your living room by measuring objects and distances in a matter of nano-seconds. The game will then render those objects, and turn the floor into lava, letting you virtually jump your way through your very own living room obstacle course.

LiDAR can also be used for a bunch of other more serious applications too, such as IKEA’s Place app, which will let you scan your room and then virtually (and accurately) decorate it.
Apple also showed off a medical app that uses LiDAR to measure the range of motion in someone’s arm.
Apple’s new iPads also come with a new, more powerful A12Z processor, which includes an eight-core GPU for 2.6x faster graphics performance, making it perfect for intensive gaming sessions.
Both new iPads also feature a new dual rear camera setup, featuring a 12-megapixel f/1.8 wide-angle camera paired with a 10-megapixel f/2.4 ultrawide.
The new iPad Pros will be available on March 25, starting at US$800 for the 11-inch model, and US$1,000 for the 12.9-inch model.
