Blizzard has unveiled the 32nd hero for Overwatch. Her name is Echo, and she’s the robotic creation of deceased Overwatch scientist, Dr. Mina Liao.
We first saw Echo way back in November 2018, in McCree’s Reunion short, where she was part of the cargo that Ashe and the rest of the Deadlock gang were trying to steal.
Her origin story now reveals that Echo was Dr. Liao’s magnum opus, and one that would continue her legacy on the Overwatch even after her death.
According to the short, Dr. Liao was one of the founding members of Overwatch, along with Jack Morrison (Soldier 76), Gabriel Reyes (Reaper), Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, and Torbjörn Lindholm.
Liao was an A.I. scientist and helped build the omnics. But after watching her creations start the Omnic War, she joined Overwatch, and created Echo, a new A.I. that is literally an echo of its creator, sharing the same mannerisms and voice as its creator.

Echo looks very different to other omnics like Bastion and Zenyetta, with a mostly white body a pair of wings and a highly-expressive holographic face.
Echo’s role and release date in-game have yet to be announced, but based on her brief appearance in the Overwatch 2 Zero Hour trailer, we know that she can fly and she appears to shoot exploding projectiles of some kind.
