East Coast Throwdown 2020 has officially been canceled in direct response to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Tournament organizers Joe “LI Joe” Ciaramelli made the announcement on Twitter and stated that everyone should “look forward to a brighter and more exciting 2021.”
The ECT team is relieved that they did not begin any registration collection or room block bookings, which means their attendees, partners, sponsors, and staff don’t have to worry about providing refunds or credit.
ECT tournament organizers are now focused on hosting next year’s event, which is already set to take place on September 3-5, 2021.
They’re also looking into producing an East Coast Throwdown special on October 2-4, 2020, which was the same weekend the event would have been held. The ECT team wants to provide a studio-based production with a live stream experience “showcasing some of the best native East Coast talent from players, commentators, and figureheads to give fans a unique variety show of sorts.”
The ECT team will still be selling merch with their 2020 event artwork designs. And the proceeds will go towards making next year’s event. The team also thanked their sponsors for their support and their publisher partners who stood by their decision to cancel the event.
East Coast Throwdown 2020 was going to be the first time the event was set to feature a Capcom Pro Tour Premier.
